Are you planning to decorate your roof this year for Halloween? Roof decorating injuries are widespread during Halloween and Christmas. Most of them can be prevented with some precautions. Check out these Halloween roof decorating tips from Williams Roofing Company.
ALWAYS WORK WITH A PARTNER
There should always be two people working on the decorating project. One person can be on the roof and the other can act as a spotter on the ground by holding the ladder or watching for other potential hazards. If an accident does happen to occur another partner on site will be able to get help as soon as possible.
TAKE NOTE OF ANY ROOF DAMAGE
Before you walk on the roof to put up decorations look for discolored roof shingles or areas with missing shingles. These areas are usually weak from leaking or general wear and tear. If you are unsure of the stability of your roof, Williams Roofing would be more than happy to assess your roof during a professional roof evaluation.
INSPECT ALL AND ELECTRICAL CORDS BEFORE INSTALLATION
Before you put extension cords or lights on your roof, make sure they are in good working condition. Frayed cords can short circuit and the roof shingles could easily start a fire. Most importantly, you should ALWAYS use outdoor lighting for your Halloween decorations. Indoor lighting is not designed to withstand the elements.
PROTECT PLUGS FROM WATER DAMAGE
One of the easiest ways to protect your outdoor Halloween lighting from the elements is to wrap the intersecting areas with electrical tape. This will cover both parts of the plugs so water cannot damage the prongs.
Avoid hanging lights in areas where rain is likely pool. The gutters and the valleys in your roofing are such areas. If there are areas of your roof that are more vulnerable to wind and rain, adjust your decorating plans to bypass those areas.
USE APPROPRIATE LADDERS
The ladder you use to put up your holiday decorations should be sturdy, secure and is at least 3 ft. taller than your entry point on the roof. Also, make sure there is someone at the base of the ladder to support it while ascending the ladder. Remember to approach the roof on a damage-free area to ensure it can hold your weight
KNOW WHEN TO ASK FOR HELP
If you feel you cannot complete your Halloween decorating on your own, then don’t risk it. You can hire professionals to decorate your roof who are sure to have the tools and equipment to get the job done right and safely.
